Musandam Mountain Safari: What the Trip Is Like

A Musandam mountain safari is a guided **4x4 drive into the Hajar Mountains** — the same day, you stand on the rim of the Khor Najd canyon, walk among 250-million-year-old marine fossils and summit **Jebel Harim (2,087m)**, the highest peak on the peninsula. 4. Jebel Harim summit. The "Mountain of Women" — 2,087m of views that stretch over the Strait of Hormuz and, on clear days, toward Iran.

• Half-day (4–5 hrs): Khor Najd, the plateau, the summit. Perfect when paired with a morning dhow cruise or when travelling with kids.
• Full-day (6–8 hrs): everything above plus slow village stops, a longer fossil walk and lunch on the plateau. Worth it if the mountains are your main interest.

What to wear and pack

• Closed shoes with grip — the viewpoints are rocky
• Layers: the plateau runs 8–10°C cooler than the coast
• Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses and at least a litre of water
• Motion-sickness tablets if winding roads affect you
• A camera with a zoom — the fossil close-ups and summit panoramas are both worth it

Who should skip it (honest advice)

Skip the safari if you're pregnant, have a back injury, or get carsick on winding roads — the track is rough in places. The viewpoints are all accessible by normal SUV, but the ride is part of the experience, not a compromise.

The smart way to schedule it

Winter (Nov–Feb): any time of day works; late afternoon gives the best summit light. Summer (May–Sep): book the 8 AM departure and be off the mountain by 1 PM — or go for the 4 PM start, when the plateau catches the golden hour and the air finally cools.
